What is a Kubernetes Cluster?
Let’s start at the beginning: container technology. What exactly is a container? And what are Kubernetes services? A container is essentially a ‘package’ consisting of an application and all the components it needs to run. Thanks to the uniform design of these containers, they work the same way wherever they are launched, on any platform and any operating system. A container is therefore an ideal foundation for hosting code.
A Kubernetes Cluster is a set of services that manages the entire container environment. A Kubernetes Cluster contains so-called master nodes, which handle cluster management. Additionally, there are worker nodes that handle the actual execution of the containers running all the application components. The Kubernetes Cluster ensures that these containers can be executed across multiple machines and environments, from virtual to physical and from cloud-based to on-premises.
Kubernetes Cluster Management
The management and infrastructure of the Kubernetes Cluster are fully handled by Fundaments; we call this: Container Platform as a Service. This allows the platform user to deploy all Kubernetes workloads onto the assigned infrastructure without having to worry about the management and availability of that infrastructure.
Highly available Kubernetes Cluster
All Kubernetes Clusters are deployed on Fundaments Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). This infrastructure comes with a 99.95% availability guarantee. By deploying the distributed architecture of Kubernetes services on this infrastructure with a minimum cluster setup of three master and worker nodes, a highly available Kubernetes Cluster is created. Through proper monitoring, every cluster is also equipped with high availability and auto-healing functionality. This functionality ensures that if one of the Kubernetes Cluster components fails, a replacement node (master or worker) is deployed, ensuring all container components of the application remain fully available.
In addition to availability, scalability is a key component of Kubernetes Clusters. The Kubernetes Clusters offered by Fundaments come in various t-shirt sizes; small, medium, and large. We always work with a fixed set of 3 master nodes, while the worker nodes consist of a set of 3 nodes of a specific size. This allows for unlimited scaling in size.

Often, an application or service is not entirely containerized, and components such as databases, load balancing, and persistent storage are also part of the total service. Fundaments can support custom solutions with Kubernetes services, ensuring your application is optimally configured and utilizes the best components.
